Notices
Curriculum Night: HPS is hosting a “How you can help at home” evening in the school hall on Thursday, June 15th from 6pm - 7pm.  The hall be set up with Literacy and Maths stations to provide a range of ways you can support your child at home with their learning.  Childcare is available in the library for HPS students if required.

Absences: In NZ students are expected to attend school daily. This is a legal requirement. Parents are asked to telephone the school office or report it on the HPS School app by 9am if their child will be absent. HPS operates an answerphone service at all times to make this process easy for families.  When leaving a message we need to know your child’s first name, last name, room number and the reason for their absence.  In the case of an absence due to medical reasons, please supply a medical certificate to the school office if your child has been absent for 3 days or longer.

Support our PTA: The PTA will be selling chocolates, Yum! Chocolates will be given out to students on Friday 9 June (Week 6). A box of 36 chocolates will go out with the eldest or only child in each family. Families will have two  weekends to sell.  Payments and unsold chocolates to be returned to school on or before Monday 19th June.  We thank our families in advance for their support :)

Chaplain
o   The  Board approve the appointment of a School Chaplain whose purpose is to listen to children who need someone to talk to other than their teacher. The Chaplain will be Police vetted and be trained as a Chaplain.
o   The Chaplain does not replace the important role of teacher or parent but enables children to offload.
o   The Chaplain reports to the Principal only if she has a concern for the safety of the child.
o   If a child chooses to use this service, they will bring home a note from the Chaplain, indicating this.

Parachutes

I was happy that my parachute landed slowly but I thought that my parachute landed very fast. That was good.

Parachutes

My parachute was made out of a plastic bag and a pencil. I don't think it was a good design because when I dropped it it went all weird and turned around and the pencil went inside the bag. I think it floated down fast for a pencil and a bag.

Making the parachute was kind of hard because of tying the stuff onto it. Sometimes it was too heavy so you have to keep changing the heavy thing that you put at the bottom.

Parachutes

I had to keep cutting the string and putting on the tape. I liked making and flying my parachute.

Parachutes

The parachutes were fun to make. I made mine out of a plastic bag, cotton and my crab pen.

Friday Extra-curricular Activities
Outside tutors offer paid Art, Kung Fu and Dance classes on Fridays during the school day. If you wish your child to take part in these you can arrange payment with the tutor. These are not school-run activities. Wilbyn at the office may have more information on the costs of these classes.

Prime Maths Workbooks
Thanks to those who have paid for the Prime Maths books. Just a reminder that everyone should have paid the $11 for this workbook by now. I emailed last week if you had not paid.

Road Safety Week
Next week is Road Safety week. This is a timely reminder to ensure we are doing everything we can to keep our roads and children safe. Please ensure you do not park or stop on the yellow lines or in driveways. Also, please make sure you and your child use the crossing on Willoughby Ave. Willoughby Ave gets very busy before and after school and it is unsafe to not use the crossing. Please set a good example for your children by following the rules and keeping yourself and others safe.

Poster Competition
As part of this, Miss Robertson is holding a poster competition, which the Travelwise leaders will judge. The posters will be centred around encouraging people to take responsibility for their own, and others’, safety on the road. Drivers and pedestrians are encouraged to look out for each other while using the road and we encourage everyone to remind their peers and community to be safe. These posters can be done at home. One winner will be chosen per year group and their posters will be displayed around the school. They will also receive a small prize. The winners will be announced at assembly next week.

Yummy Stickers
If you buy fruit that have Yummy stickers on them, save these and send them to school. We can get free sports equipment with these. If you would like a sheet to keep at home until it's full or take to work, let me know and I'll send one home.

Chinese Students
Six students from our sister school, Lugu Valley School in China, are spending a week at HPS next week. We will have two of these students in our room - Xinju and Yaxuan.

Blog
There are some photos from the Retro Mufti on the class blog too.
